How to connect WhatsApp to ChatGPT
On every ChatGPT plan, including free, ChatGPT prepares a ready message link: you open it and press Send. On paid plans with developer mode, ChatGPT can connect to OTP Run directly.
Links like WhatsApp Web. This is not an official Meta service.
Before you start: link your number
Create a free OTP Run account and link your WhatsApp number in a minute, the same way as WhatsApp Web. Your assistant then writes from this number, and replies come back to you.

On the free plan ChatGPT cannot send by itself, so it prepares a ready link for each message.
Copy this phrase:
Phrase for your assistant Please remember this for our future chats. I use OTP Run to send WhatsApp messages from my own number. When I ask you to write to someone on WhatsApp, prepare the message and give me a link like this: https://otprun.com/app/compose?to=NUMBER&text=TEXT. After to= put the phone number with the country code, or a contact name from my OTP Run address book; separate several recipients with commas. After text= put the message, encoded for a link (a space is %20, a plus is %2B, a new line is %0A). Show the link so I can click it: I open it, check the message and press Send myself. If I did not name the recipients myself, first show me the list and the text and wait for my OK. I read the replies in OTP Run: https://otprun.com/app/conversations
Paste it into a new ChatGPT chat and send it. With memory on, ChatGPT keeps it for later chats; you can also add it in Settings → Personalization → Custom instructions.
Ask, for example: “Write to Anna on WhatsApp that I’ll be 10 minutes late.”
Open the link ChatGPT gives you, check the message and press Send.
Paid plans: connect directly
With developer mode, ChatGPT connects to OTP Run like an app. On plans that allow it, it sends messages and reads replies without links.
In ChatGPT, open Settings → Apps (on some plans it is called Plugins) → Advanced settings and turn on Developer mode.
Click Create app or Add custom MCP server and name it OTP Run.
Paste this server address:
https://otprun.com/mcpSave, sign in to OTP Run and click Allow. Then turn the app on in a chat.
What to ask after connecting
Write to Anna on WhatsApp that I’ll be 10 minutes late.
Make links to congratulate Mom and Dad on their anniversary, one message each.
Write to the plumber +7 701 000 00 00: can he come tomorrow after 18:00?
Prepare a polite reminder to Mark about the invoice, in English.
Turn this list of three phone numbers into messages asking about delivery times.
If something does not work
- ChatGPT says it cannot send messages
- That is expected on the free plan: ask it for a message link instead. If it forgot the phrase, paste it again.
- The link opens a sign-in page
- Sign in to OTP Run once; after that the message opens filled in.
- There is no developer mode
- Developer mode is available only on some paid plans. Message links work on every plan.
- The text in the link looks broken
- Ask ChatGPT to encode the text for a link. You can also fix the text on the send page before you press Send.
You stay in control
You choose which chats the assistant may read: all of them or only those it wrote to.
Before it writes to people you did not name, the assistant shows you the list and the text and waits for your OK.
You can disconnect the assistant at any time on the project page in your account.
Questions and answers
Does it work with free ChatGPT?
Yes, through message links. On the free plan ChatGPT does not send by itself: it gives you a link, and you press Send.
Do I need to give ChatGPT an API key?
No. Never paste keys into a chat. Message links work without a key, and the direct connection uses sign-in.
Can ChatGPT read the replies?
With the direct connection, on plans that allow it, yes. With message links, you read the replies in your OTP Run conversations.
Will ChatGPT remember the phrase?
If memory is on, usually yes. To be sure, add it in Settings → Personalization → Custom instructions.
